Energy-Efficient Appliances Reduce Costs in the long term

Energy-efficient appliances can contribute a good share of utility cost reduction in any household. Aside from heating and cooling, kitchens use the most energy of any room in the house.

Technological advances in the last ten years have created a new breed of efficient appliances, and upgrading to newer models, especially with refrigerators and freezers, would be a wise investment. refrigerators with top or bottom freezers for example are 10 to 30 percent more efficient than side-by-side refrigerators. Also, in most cases, refrigerators now have power-save switches to shut off the anti-condensation feature, were a heater warms the exterior of the fridge (!).

Almost 90 percent of all old appliances are now being recycled, and much of the new steel used for appliances contains some recycled steel.

When it comes to cooking, only about 7 to 10 percent of your household energy is spent among cooktop, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. So honestly, your cooking habits might have a larger impact on your energy savings.

You still can control your consumption through various technologies, fuel types and efficiencies, and performance factors (refer to fuel efficienciesfor more info. In other words, it's important to read and understand the "Energy Guide" labels.

If you are slowly phasing out appliances as they break, you can still incorporate a simple maintenance routine to help maximize the efficiency and life of your appliances until you are able to transition to new appliances
